Grooming and Cleaning

Keeping your hamster's enclosure clean and providing regular health checks are essential parts of responsible pet ownership. Good hygiene helps prevent illness, maintains a comfortable living environment, and allows you to spot any changes in your hamster's health or behaviour at an early stage.

Unlike some other pets, hamsters do not require bathing or extensive grooming routines. Instead, their care focuses on maintaining a clean habitat, providing opportunities for natural self-grooming, and carrying out regular health observations.

Habitat Cleaning & Maintenance

Hamsters are clean animals, but they of course need cleaning like every pet. It used to be common to do a full clean out every full weeks but we now know what should be done instead to keep the hamster as happy as possible. Hamsters should never have a full cage clean. This means emptying out all of the bedding and cleaning everything. This is because hamsters are very scent orientated animals so rely on their scent to be able to get around. It also causes them great deals of stress which can sometimes cause hamsters to become very ill and or die.
Here's what you should do instead:

Daily Spot Cleaning

Spot cleaning involves removing soiled bedding, uneaten fresh food, and any areas that have become particularly dirty. This helps maintain hygiene without disrupting your hamster's entire habitat.

Fresh foods such as vegetables should be removed within a few hours to prevent spoilage, particularly during warmer weather.

Disinfecting
When cleaning ceramic/ plastic items:

  • you can use warm water and washing up liquid and a pet safe cleaning spray

  • dry completely before putting it in the enclosure

When cleaning natural items:

  • you can gently wash items such as wooden hides and platforms with hot soapy water and or a pet safe spray

  • make sure these items are fully dry to avoid mould

  • to prevent mites in your enclosure, freeze all natural products for at least 48 hours or bake at a low temperature in the oven. this kills any potential bugs off.

Deep Cleaning
Full enclosure cleans should only be carried out when genuinely needed. for example if your hamster contracts a disease or mites or passes away and you are making room for a new hamster

Sand Baths & Natural Grooming

Unlike some pets, hamsters should never be bathed in water unless advised by a veterinarian. Water baths can remove natural oils from their fur and may cause significant stress or chilling.

Instead, hamsters keep themselves clean through natural grooming behaviours and by using sand baths.

Choosing the Right Sand

Hamsters require safe, dust-free sand that is specifically suitable for small animals. Fine dust or products designed for other species can cause respiratory problems and should be avoided.

The sand bath should be large enough for your hamster to roll, dig, and groom comfortably.

Benefits of Sand Baths

Sand baths provide several important benefits, including:

  • Helping to remove excess oils from the coat

  • Encouraging natural grooming behaviours

  • Providing sensory and digging enrichment

  • Supporting overall fur condition

  • Offering an additional activity within the enclosure

Many hamsters spend a significant amount of time digging and rolling in their sand area, making it both a grooming tool and a form of enrichment.

Dental Care

Dental health is an important part of hamster care, as their teeth grow continuously throughout their lives. Providing suitable items to chew helps wear down their teeth naturally and prevents problems such as overgrowth, which can make eating difficult and may require veterinary treatment.

Safe chewing materials should always be available within the enclosure. Natural options are often the most beneficial and can also provide valuable enrichment.

Popular chew items include:

  • Apple wood sticks

  • Willow balls and tunnels

  • Natural loofah chews

  • Cork pieces

  • Safe wooden toys designed for small animals

  • Cardboard enrichment items

A healthy hamster should be able to eat comfortably and maintain a good appetite.

Home Cleaning & Hygiene

Using pet-safe cleaning products is essential for maintaining a healthy environment. Strong chemicals, scented sprays, and household disinfectants can irritate a hamster's sensitive respiratory system and should never be used inside their enclosure.

Useful cleaning essentials include:

  • Small animal-safe disinfectants

  • Cleaning brushes for accessories and wheels

  • Replacement sand for sand baths

  • Fresh bedding and nesting materials

  • Waste scoops for spot cleaning

  • Pet-safe wipes for cleaning accessories

Having the right supplies on hand makes regular maintenance easier and helps keep your hamster's environment clean and comfortable.
